A new district map has been adopted in Redwood Metropolis with focus largely placed on ensuring underserved communities get a stronger voice during election cycles but drawing concerns past some who will have to wait six years until theirs are heard.

"For me the process starts with what are the criteria? What is the problem nosotros're being asked to solve? When I look at it through that lens, it does experience that this notion of the communities of involvement and the [Citizen Voting Age Population] rise very rapidly to the height," Mayor Giselle Unhurt said during Monday'south council coming together.

Councilmembers voted 5-2 to back a new map, labeled Map C3, with Vice Mayor Diana Reddy and Councilmember Diane Howard voting in opposition.

Map C3 is a slightly modified version of another map, Map C2, which was supported past the city'due south Advisory Redistricting Committee. Paul Mitchell with Redistricting Partners, a consulting business firm hired to assist in the city's process, noted that some voters volition be accelerated and others deferred regardless of which map was selected. Deferred voting is also non amid the ranked criteria included in the Off-white Maps Deed, which governs how districts should be drafted, said Mitchell and City Attorney Veronica Ramirez.
